History of Judo therapy
This is the story of the people who created Judo therapy and kept the tradition
alive for years.
▼What is Judo therapy?
Do you know any medical treatment born from martial arts? There is such
medical treatment in Japan. Judo therapy is a medical treatment born from
Judo, a traditional Japanese martial art. I
Judo therapy is a traditional medical treatment that has been handed down
in Japan for a long time, and many Judo therapist still treat patients
with this traditional technique every day in Japan.
Judo therapy specializes in emergency medical care, mainly treats fractures
and dislocations of the joints. Besides that, Judo therapists also treat
various pains. Patients with chronic back pain can also be improved by
Judo therapy.
Since Judo therapy is a treatment method that does not require surgery
or medication, it can also be used to treat patients who do not like Western
medicine.
Currently, there are many Judo therapy clinics called “Sekkotsu-in (bone-setting
clinic)” in Japan. Of course, since the Judo therapy clinic is a formal
medical facility, it is possible to use medical insurance. Patients go
to the Judo therapy clinics just like going to the hospital.
The reason why Judo therapy is so wonderful is that injuries that would
otherwise require surgery or prescription can be healed only by hand.
In order to master this technique, it is necessary to study Judo therapy
at a Japanese vocational school or university for at least 3 years and
pass the national examination. The passing rate of the national examination for Judo therapy is only around
60%, so it is very difficult to become Judo therapist here in Japan.
Therefore, it is very difficult for non-Japanese people to master this
technique. There are medical professionals from various countries who come
to Japan to study Judo therapy to obtain this qualification, but unfortunately
it is very difficult, and many challengers give up on the way.
▼History of Judo therapy
Judo therapy was originally born from Jiu-jitsu (the martial art that became
the origin of Judo) about 1300 years ago. Japanese martial arts fight with
great respect for their opponents. As you probably know, traditional Japanese
martial arts such as Judo, Karate and Aikido always bow before and after
a fight with an opponent.
In Japan, even if you have to fight your opponent, you never forget to
respect them. Therefore, not only the technique of defeating the opponent
but also the technique of curing the opponent is important. Judo therapy
was born from such Japanese culture.
In the Sengoku period (1467-1615) martial arts books, there are descriptions
of `"Sappou (killing methods) Sappou'' and "Kappou (healing methods)''.
Sappou is a way to defeat your opponent. Kappou is a method of treating
an injured person.
The Sengoku period samurai thus had to learn how to defeat their opponents
as well as learn how to heal them. This is an idea born out of the Japanese
culture of "respecting others." And Judo therapy was born from
this idea of Kappou.
In the Heian period (749-1185), the treatment method for dislocation, fracture,
bruise, and wound is described in Volume 18 of "Ishinho", which
is said to be the oldest medical book in Japan. This book is one of the
roots of Judo therapy. From this, we can see that the history of Judo therapy
is very long.
It is often said that Judo therapy techniques are similar to chiropractic
and osteopathy, but Judo therapy has a very very long history.
The Edo period (1603-1868) was a time when Judo therapy technology was
further updated. That's because many martial arts masters and doctors have
created a treatment that became the root of Judo therapy
In 1746, martial arts master Hoyoku Takashi published Japan's oldest specialized
book on Sekkotsu (bone-setting), "Bone-repairing and healing."
This book is the basis of modern Judo therapy. This bone-setting book was
influenced by many Chinese medical books.
Dr.Hanaoka Seishu has published "Hanaoka Seishu Bone-setting Secret
Map" and "Hanaoka Seishū Jijutsu", which are greatly influenced
by Dutch medical books. This also became the basis of modern Judo therapy.
In addition, Dr.Genka Ninomiya, a person who has made outstanding achievements
in bone-setting techniques, published the "Bone-setting Shinsho",
also had a great influence on today's Judo therapy.
Judo therapy has developed and systematized under the influence of various
foreign medicines such as Germany, England, Spain, France, and Portugal.
So, as you can see, Judo therapy has grown by incorporating not only traditional
medicine but also the latest medical treatments from various countries.
The techniques of Judo therapy is both traditional and the latest technology,
so it is a medical technique that has been supported by many people in
Japan since ancient times.
After the Meiji Restoration (1868-1889), traditional medicine declined
due to the establishment of a new medical system by the new government.
In 1894, the bone-setting business was abolished by the law. This put Judo
therapy in danger of survival.
▼Jigoro Kano, the father of Judo
Jigoro Kano (1860-1938), the father of Judo
In this crisis, Jigoro Kano, the father of Judo, and other Judo practitioner led a judo therapist petition campaign. As a result of this movement, the Massage Business Control Regulations were revised in 1920, and the supplementary provisions include a description of Judo therapy. Then, the Judo therapy examination was held at the beginning of this year.
However, after World War II, Judo therapy was reconsidered due to the abolition
of martial arts and the ban on medical care without medical education due
to the intervention of GHQ.
Due to the review of Judo therapy techniques, a Judo therapist training
school was established and the law was improved. In order to make it medical
care with medical education, it was decided to build a system to qualify
by graduating from a training school for Judo therapist and taking an examination.
After that, training schools were opened in various places in Japan, and
the Judo therapy law was enacted in 1970. In this way, the Judo therapy
was established and became a nationally recognized medical treatment.
Today, to become a judo therapist, one has to study at school for more
than three years. Of course, students need to study anatomy and physiology
at school, but they spend a lot of time studying orthopedic surgery because
it requires the same level of knowledge as orthopedic surgeons.
The education in Judo therapy school also includes Judo. One of the conditions
for becoming a Judo therapist is "to have the ability to have a black
belt'', so many Judo therapists are black belt holders.
There are many reasons why Judo therapists need to master judo. Judo therapy
is a technique originally born from martial arts, so the practitioner must
have the spirit of martial arts. That spirit is the spirit of Kappou.
Some Judo therapy treatment techniques are derived from Judo techniques,
so it is necessary to improve Judo techniques to improve treatment techniques.
The father of Judo, Jigoro Kano, struggled against big opponents because
he wasn't big. After all, in martial arts, the bigger the body, the better.
From such experiences, Judo was born, in which even a small body throws
away a big opponent. Jigoro is said to have thrown many big opponents with
his small body. A small body has only a small amount of power, but the
reason why it can still throw a big opponent is the "principle of
leverage".
Judo Therapy uses the "leverage principle" derived from judo
techniques. By using the "leverage principle" even therapists
with low physical strength can treat big patients. Therefore, in Japan,
even a small female Judo therapist can treat a gigantic patient.

▼Judo therapy in recent years
Modern Judo therapy treatment methods incorporate not only techniques using
just hands, but also devices with thermal effects and electrotherapy. Judo
therapy is an "evolving technique" that continues to incorporate
the latest medical care while maintaining traditional techniques.
Judo herapy is a treatment born from Judo, as the name "Judo"
implies. Judo techniques may also be used to heal fractures and dislocations.
Since Judo is a martial art with many injuries, it is said that the Judo
instructor obtained a qualification as a Judo therapist and treated the
injured student himself during the Judo lesson.
Since many Judo instructor have a history of becoming Judo therapist, even
today, in order to become a Judo therapist, you must be able to do Judo.
In Japan, Judo and Judo therapy are inseparable. Many Judoist rely on a
Judo therapy to condition their body. Judo therapists have a better understanding
of Judo injuries because they are also Judoist. And they'll know how to
improve Judo's performance with the right medical knowledge. For this reason,
Japanese professional Judoist often have private Judo therapist for them.
